In the film, Forks over Knives. The film asserts that deadly diseases, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, can be prevented, controlled or reversed, if we improve (change) our diets. What is the meaning behind the name of the movie?

Our diets have caused obesity and diseases. Here are the alarming statistics:

The average American carries an extra 23 pounds.

Every 60 seconds an American dies from heart disease.

460,000 American women died from heart disease and stroke this year.

There are 215,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed each year.

1,500 people a day die from cancer.

1 out of 3 Americans will develop diabetes in their lifetime.

1 in 5 American four-year olds are considered to be obese, and there is an unprecedented number of kids being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. “This is the first generation where the kids are actually not expected to live as long as their parents did because of all the horrible processed foods out there and lack of exercise”

At least half of Americans are taking some form of prescription drugs.

“We spend $2.2 trillion on health care every year in America which is five times more than the defense budget”

            Our diets are causing these diseases. The lack of exercise (activity or not being active) is another factor. “We’re in the bottom part of the world as far as health goes because we’re treating symptoms and treating sickness”

 Instead, we need to treat the cause to prevent people from getting sick in the first place.

            How can we prevent, control or reverse diseases? According to the film, we must wean ourselves off all animal products, including dairy, cheese and milk, and get to a whole food, plant-based diet.

Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine.”
