Insomnia is a condition that plagues many Americans today.  The proper amount of sleep to maintain health is often featured on the daily news shows and health related productions such as Dr Oz.  The total amount of sleep is not as important as the amount of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.  It is critical for optimal health to get at least two hours of deep, REM sleep every night.  This allows the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, the “rest and digest” system, to do its job.  So many sleep aids are touted as the “secret to a long nights rest” but a recent study showed that people taking most sleep aids only get an additional 11 minutes of sleep.  I know, risking all those side effects for an extra 11 minutes! Seems silly, doesn’t it.  Below are some questions I am often asked in regards to sleep.

Absolutely.  Insomnia can be cured very quickly by finding the cause.  It takes 21 days to cure the worst cases of insomnia.

But I work the night shift.  How can I get better sleep?

Realize that you will be deficient in nutrients and your rate of disease will be higher.  That is the real reason they call it the “graveyard shift”.  Increase your vitamin D3, Omega-3s and practice getting into REM sleep quickly.  Overall, try and find a day job to ensure better health.

What is REM sleep?

Rapid Eye Movement…or deep healing sleep.

What is so important about sleeping between 11 and 1AM?

Your body is under Circadian rhythms and your gallbladder secretes between 11 and 1.  It’s vital that you are asleep then so you can absorb more nutrients in your system.  That’s when the rest digest and repair system (parasympathetic) kicks in.

How many hours of sleep do I need?

You need a minimum of two hours a REM sleep per day.  The average healthy sleep is between 5 and 7 hours under normal physiology.  If you have an illness you may require more sleep.

Is sleep really that important?

Yes it is.  You can live without sleep but will die without REM sleep.

    Hi Dr. Bergman
    These last few weeks have been really rough. For about the last 2 weeks I have been having troubles with insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, digestive problems, and I believe some depression. It started when I had a completely sleepless night a couple weeks ago. I had to wake up really early for work. I tried going to sleep earlier the next few days to catch up, but I couldn’t fall asleep! When I did fall asleep I would wake frequently and wake up very tired in the morning. I don’t know how much longer I can really take it. I just want restful sleep again!

      I want to add that lately I have been trying methods of getting better quality sleep, like reducing electronics use, keeping the room dark, etc. I have also tried chamomile tea and valerian root. My sleep schedule before that was something like 11 or 12pm to 8am ish. Is it possible that I am disrupting my circadian rhythm?

    • We need to get you to sleep as soon as possible, and we have to get you to a corrective Chiropractor and get your nervous system check fast, for your sleep we have to deprive you of sleep so you can get the R.E.M. state fast, make sure you are in bed at 10:30 and get up by 4 am. Check out our sleep video and handout you will need to do some work but after 5 days you will be sleeping and after 21 days you will have new circadian rhythms and you will be back on track.

        Thank you for your response. I’m limiting my sleep to about 11 – 5 every night and eliminating REM inhibitors. It seems to be working very well. One thing though is that I still am feeling very anxious, and I believe I have a dominant sympathetic nervous system. Do you have any videos or handouts on stress and anxiety?

    I always wake-up between 5 and 7 hungry. If I don’t eat I only get more awake. Where to look for the cause?

    No matter what diet, low-carb paleo, high-carb paleo, or just the default dutch diet with whole grains, low fat etc.

    I take 2 mg melatonin, 3 gram glycine, and 100 mg valerian root for sleep. These supplements and EMDR theraphy cured very bad sleep, but I still wake up every night.

    • Hi Harmenjeurink, When you eat food you stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system also called the Rest Digest and Repair system, so since you require food to stimulate that that means you have some sympathetic stimulus or Fight or Flight going on, you have to get to a corrective Chiropractor as soon as possible to get your nervous system checked and get it back in balance

    Hiya it’s angel again, I have been doin my neck exercises and my shoulders exercise, I just love them, it’s the first time in 5 years I haven’t use my walking stick and I can stand straight, still painful but it’s only been 6 days since I saw your You Tube, but still finding it hard to sleep at night, what else can I do to quite that brain of mine? I have watch nearly all of the You Tube videos and applying it daily. Thank you, your a God seen to the world, bless you.

    Hi there,
    I am living in France at the moment, I Have taken my be 100 plains in the last 18months,
    I dislocated my shoulder 3 months ago , and broke two rids 10 months ago, I was very active ,
    I have beenunder a lot of stress for a few years now ,in June I stopped sleeping, I would go for For days on end with out sleep, 5 was the most, ,,, I have all the signs of adrenal burnout, -Fibromyalgia ,,
    I am going nuts,,, I was prescribed xanax to sleep, which helped at first, now it only works for a few hours
    The pain in the neck and shoulders is terrible, should I make an Skype appointment with you,,??
    I am willing to travel to see you, it will cost me thousands, but my life marriage and family are worth it,,
    In the mean time is there any thing that will help the sleep,,

    • Hi Martin, lets get you healthy!!! we have to solve the sleep issue fast the lack of sleep means your body and mind can’t heal, a Skype consult would be fastest but let see what we can do through email for now. With the trauma to your ribs and shoulder that also means you will have forward head carriage and that can pull the brain stem and cause extreme stress on your nervous system, we have to get you to a Chiropractor and get a set of x-ray of your spine, the whole spine! and the lets work on detoxing your body, first drink lots of healthy water and that would depend on your weight, you will be taking in at least 2 to 4 liters of healthy water per day, order some earthing sheets from the internet, and start juicing and blending to clean your arteries, once we get you to 3 bowel movements a day and reduce your forward head carriage then the sleep will come.     Hi again Dr Bergman,
    I contacted you few weeks ago and I will remained you of my case. I was born in 1964 and when I was 13-14 years of age I noticed for the first time depigmentation of my skin. At that time medicine knew very little about vitiligo and luckily it was confined to my private parts, my anus, tips of the fingers and toes and edges of my mouth. It didn’t spread and it wasn’t noticeable. However when I was around 35 (when I was 25 I moved to London and I have to admit my diet changed for a worst and level of the stress increased quite a lot) I got alopecia areata. It first appeared on my beard and I decided to eliminate my beard entirely by EPL – laser treatment. When I thought that I just got away with it (10 years ago – when I was around 40) first alopecia patches appeared on my scalp. I was advised to try a steroid injections and I did that whenever bold patches appeared on my scalp. It worked for a 6 -7 years. And then the patches started to grow larger and alopecia appeared on my eyebrows and last three years were really the worst. Problem was that two years ago I got divorced from my wife (with whom I have a daughter – three years old). I almost forgot to mention that for 25 (from 20 to 45) I was an alcoholic and from 30 to 45 I was a drug addict as well with five years when I was on drugs and alcohol almost every day. I did manage to function quite well – I graduated two universities , had a successful business and the only problems I noticed were the mental ones. However I did not have any problems to simply stop using drugs or drink and except occasional glass of red vine when I sometimes go out with friends I have no problem “staying clean”. Two years ago when I realised that I will lose battle against alopecia I decided to properly research the matter. I changed my diet completely: I distill the water and drink two liters of water per day and no “artificial” beverages at all – I make organic cocoa, tea or sometimes coffee. Distilled water (in my opinion is to active chemically so I add in it mineral drops to in and then I structure it through “Victor Schauberger” device. I completely eliminated grains from my diet including the “gluten free” ones and the potatoes as well. I do eat sometimes sweet potatoes. I do not eat any processed foods and there is only one type of candy that is 100% natural – no sugars, gluten, soy, milk, etc, that I eat. Only fats that I use for consumption and cooking are organic butter, org. coconut oil and olive oil (not for cooking). Only vinegar I use is org. Apple Cider Vinegar. Most of my diet is veggies and fruit (around 80-90%) and beef and lamb meat that is organic and fish that is usually not farmed. I use vitamin Solgar D3 4000, Life Extension – Super K K2 220mcg, BioAstin Astaxanthin 12mg, SunBiotics Probiotics, Green Pastures – Blue Ice Royal cod liver oil and butter oil blend, ReMag Pico-Ionic Magnesium and topically magnesium chloride hexahydrate and sometimes nascent iodine. Every day I make live yogurt from coconut milk with tibetan mushroom cultures and take spirulina, chlorella, kelp and cilantro tincture. I eat lots of garlic, ginger and turmeric. I have eliminated all sugars and my consumption is minimal one tea spoon of organic honey (and sometimes little bit of xylitol) and I could even do without any sugars at all. All meats butter and eggs are 100% organic. Fruit and veggies are mainly organic (and 60-70% raw and often blended) but not 100% organic (there is list of dirty dozen and clean fifteen that I apply when I can not buy organic for some reason) I am in much better state now (and mentally and physically) – I have only one bold patch on my head, my beard has fully regrown, my eyebrows are painfully slowly growing back (but they are growing beck) and only on my legs I have just half of regrowth. However I don’t want to accept half solutions and have alopecia coming back in a few years. In last two months It came to my attention that there are many
    medical professionals in US who had a different approach to autoimmune diseases and it looks it makes a sense and it works. I went to corrective chiropractor and did the examinations and I do have three subluxations and I started to fix the issue. I have all the scans but I am not sure what is the best way to send them to you. I have recently sent my hair for lab analysis for mineral deficiencies, food allergies etc. As far as I can see I will have to do vitamin D test as well.

    • Hi Nash, you have made some great changes so far, stop the xylitol that can negatively affect your digestion and ask your Chiropractor if digestive enzymes would be appropriate you also may want to try so gelatin for tissue repair and your Chiropractor can contact me any time for advise and you may have an unstable pelvis so have him check you for a trochanter support also he may need to do a cervical challenge for your C1

If you need to see my x-rays I can send them to you – I would need an email address to forward them to you.
        He agrees to do any additional checks but he would like to be informed about your strategies and what is the main goal – apologies if I do not make complete sense it is a hard job trying to communicate in between two chiropractors.
